Three people were injured Monday morning when a man fell asleep at the wheel of his Ford truck while driving on Highway 12 west of Oakmont. The 25-year-old told officers that he nodded off and rear-ended a big rig, starting a five-car pileup that closed the road from about 9 to 11 a.m.
The collision with the truck trailer sent the Santa Rosa man’s vehicle into oncoming traffic. It struck a Toyota Highlander, which then collided with a Toyota pickup. A fifth car, a Mercury Sable, was also involved.
The drivers of the Ford truck and the Highlander, which ran into and broke a telephone poll, were seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. A passenger in the Toyota pickup sustained a minor injury.
