Calling young artists

Sonoma’s 2014 Student Creative Arts Award Program is now open for entries. This award program is open to Sonoma Valley residents between the age of 16 and 21 who are studying visual, literary or performing arts.

“We are pleased to again be able to offer a $2,000 award to local up-and-coming artists to help them further their studies in the arts,” said Lisa Carlsson, chair of the Cultural and Fine Arts Commission. “I have been truly amazed by the talent demonstrated by Sonoma Valley students.”

Previous winners include Sonoma Valley High School students Sarah Summers in 2011, Esmeralda Chavez-Mata in 2012, and Maya Smoot in 2013.

Applicants must submit a completed application form, to include a 200 to 500 word statement explaining the role that art has played in their life and what their plans are for continuing their artistic training, and a portfolio of at least five works. Additionally, applicants will be interviewed by commission members.

The application form may be downloaded from Sonomacity.org. The deadline to submit an entry is January 17, 2014. For additional information contact the city clerk at 933-2216 or gjohann@sonomacity.org.
