The Sonoma Valley Community Health Center will host flu shot clinics on two upcoming Saturday mornings at Vintage House: November 8 and December 6, both from 9 a.m. to noon.
Flu shots will be offered for a requested $20 donation, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. While anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu should get vaccinated, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends especially those at highest risk from complications of the flu receive a shot.
This includes: Persons age 65 and older; residents of nursing homes and other long term care facilities; those with lung or heart disorders or diabetes, kidney disease or weakened immune systems; pregnant women; health care workers; those who are in close contact with persons at high risk from the flu. Flu shots will also be available for children six months and up.
According to the CDC, the single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent the flu.
