Mentor recruitment reception

Growing up, who mentored you? Was it your favorite coach, your favorite teacher, perhaps a neighbor or family friend? “We all had adults in our life that we knew we could turn to for advice, guidance, counsel or just a helping hand,” said Kathy Witkowicki, executive director of the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance. “Well, kids still need those adults.”

Actually, they need them more today than ever before, she said. The incidence of children being raised by a single parent has increased dramatically over the years, and so has the need for both parents to work fulltime.

“Presently, there are more than 150 children on a waiting list who could really benefit from having caring adult role models that they can look up to and trust,” Witkowicki said.

To address that need, the Alliance will host a Mentor Recruitment Reception at Ramekins on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will be a brief presentation describing mentoring options, such as one-on-one mentoring as well as group mentoring, where two or three adults mentor a small group of children. “We take great pride in making matches that last, and we provide you with on-going relationship workshops and wrap-around support services to ensure that they do,” said Witkowicki.
