Stunning underwater scenes from the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located off the shores of Marin and Sonoma Counties, are part of an exhibit of photographs from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration opening at the Sonoma Valley Library through January 3.
The sanctuary was established in 1999 to preserve the area’s extraordinary marine ecosystem surrounding the Cordell Bank. The remote bank, six miles off shore, sits at the edge of the continental shelf and rises abruptly from the soft sediments of the shelf to within 115 feet of the ocean surface. Ocean conditions and seafloor contour combine to create an incredible biodiversity both above and below the surface, and a haven for local and highly migratory ocean wildlife.
A presentation, including video, by NOAA Education and Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Stock will kick-off the exhibit on Wednesday, November 5 at 6 p.m. in the Library Forum Room. Jennifer will discuss this magical ocean oasis and show underwater video footage of this hidden mysterious environment. This exhibit is free through January 3, and open to the public. 755 W. Napa St. 996.5217. Facebook.com/sonomavalleylibrary.
