Sonoma Community Center continues its 2015 Winter Performance Series on January 31 with Jazz-Rock fusion band Joseph in the Well.
The Sacramento-based band performs as a four-piece ensemble with violin, electric guitar, upright bass, and percussion. The group’s unique sound has been compared to Andrew Bird, Grizzly Bear, and the Shins, and draws inspiration from multiple genres, including rock, jazz, classical, and world music.
“There are a lot of instrumental and improvisational elements that jazz lovers will really enjoy,” said founder Joe Kye. Kye’s background is as interesting as the band’s music: he was born in Seoul, raised in Seattle, and now resides in Sacramento. As a result, his songwriting and nuanced arrangements reflect this transient upbringing.
In his music, Kye delves into the fears, injustices, and joys of being an immigrant with lush, three-part harmonies and layers of intricate string arrangements.
Joseph in the Well plays the Rotary Stage in the Sonoma Community Center’s Andrews Hall at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m). Tickets and the full Winter Performance Series lineup is available online at svbo.org, by calling 707.938.4626 x1, or in person at the Sonoma Community Center office, 276 East Napa Street in Sonoma.
