Sonoma Council: Put blower ban on 2016 ballot

Unable once again to settle the issue of banning leaf blowers, the Sonoma City Council finally reached a consensus Monday night: let the voters decide. The matter will be placed on the 2016 ballot.

Last month, Councilmember Rachel Hundley appeared to be the decisive third vote when the Council requested ban language from staff.

Councilmembers Laurie Gallian and Madolyn Agrimonti have favored a ban, while Gary Edwards and David Cook firmly oppose one.

But Monday night, Hundley said that public opinion is so divided that she no longer has a sense of what the community actually wants. She will be voting on the issue, she said, at the ballot box.

The specific language of the ballot measure will be drafted by City staff, and approved by the Council at a future meeting.

According to Sonoma City Manager Carol Giovanatto said that, as per the County Registrar of Voters, the estimate for adding a ballot measure in 2016 is $3,853-$9,632.

Also on that 2016 ballot: two Council seats, those of Gallian and Cook.
