The project is expected to save approximately more than 300,000 kilowatt hours, as well as approximately $70,000 in annual energy costs to the City. This amounts to reducing roughly 180,000 pounds of CO2 greenhouse gas output every year.
The current phase, which involves installation of the new LED cobra head streetlight fixtures, will be completed by the end of the month. Phase two, installing new LED decorative “post-top” streetlight fixtures, will begin in early November.
Not only will the project reduce the City’s energy use, according to the Public Wokrs Department, but it will also reduce maintenance costs and improve the color and quality of light throughout the City, making streets safer for vehicles and pedestrians. It also minimizes glare to adjacent residences.
The $360,000 project was funded through Measure J sales tax revenues, a $41,000 PG&E rebate, and $250,000 of PG&E financing at 0% interest.
