Town Hall meeting to discuss County pot laws

The County of Sonoma Medical Marijuana Ad Hoc Committee will hold a Town Hall Meeting on January 25 to discuss marijuana regulation in unincorporated Sonoma County, including the Springs and El Verano.

The board has identified the safety, health, environmental, and economic impacts of marijuana as a key priority. This initial meeting will give community members an opportunity to provide feedback and direction on a proposed process for creating local policy related to medical marijuana.

The Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 25, at the Santa Rosa Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. 1351 Maple Avenue in Santa Rosa.

The Medical Marijuana Ad Hoc Committee was created by the Board of Supervisors on January 5, with Supervisors Efren Carrillo and Susan Gorin appointed to serve on the committee. The Ad Hoc Committee intends to work closely with the community to develop comprehensive regulations that are consistent with the recently enacted Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act (MMRSA).

The MMRSA contains a March 1, 2016, deadline for local jurisdictions to regulate marijuana cultivation. In light of this deadline, the Board is prepared to hear an urgency ordinance on February 2nd explicitly reaffirming existing cultivation regulations. This would assure that local policy is not superseded by the State.

The Board will also provide direction on further marijuana policy development. The planning timeline is envisioned as a year to eighteen month process with many opportunities for public comment and culminating in a comprehensive policy that complements Sonoma County’s unique character.
