Sometimes family comes to visit, and sometimes you just need to play tourist in your own backyard.

Buena Vista Winery (18000 Old Winery Rd., Sonoma | 800-926-1266 | buenavistawinery.com) offers the best visitor experience – for locals and tourists alike.

Take a tour, led by of Count Haraszthy, of the oldest commercial winery in California. Wine dandy and owner Jean-Charles Boisset has brought the deteriorating winery back to its glory – it’s a beauty.

Guests can enjoy a tour of the historic wine tool museum, where Boisset displays, in a multi-media experience, one of the world’s greatest collections of wine production tools.

See the historic Hungarian barrels that age red wines. Sit back and relax in the JCB Bubble Lounge, one of the sexiest and most funky hidden secrets in Wine Country. Oh, and lots of wine to taste.

As if it can’t get anymore fun, you can be Winemaker for a Day. For $100 you’ll tour the winery, dress in fancy costume (seriously, fancy hats!), and create your own wine blend, with your own custom wine label.
