After 61 years cutting hair in the same Springs location, John Mazza, right, hands the keys to the Boyes Barber Shop to new owner Antonio Juan. After 25 years in the Coast Guard, Juan, a South San Francisco native, went to barber school with the idea of opening a shop in the Valley.
“It was a dream to have my own business and be part of the community,” he said. He made some inquiries, including perhaps renting a station in an existing salon. He learned that Mazzo, a one-chair operation, was looking to retire after his long run. (It was a barber shop for more than 30 years when Mazzo bought it, making it perhaps the longest running business in the Springs). The two quickly cut a deal.
Juan is planning to spruce the place up, and open a week later, on March 12. He’s been trained in all the contemporary looks, and will welcome clients of all ages for cuts starting at $12. Commuting all of four blocks from Calle del Monte, the shop location fulfills another part of Juan’s dream. “I always wanted to be able to walk to work.” Boyes Barber Shop is located at 17969 Highway 12, across from Andy’s Liquors. 707.694
