Marijuana delivery services can circumvent a Sonoma ban by flying their product in a drone to the customer’s home, a court has ruled. The ban remains for delivery by other means, but attorneys for Amazon Medical successfully argued that a drone flying at 200 feet is in “international airspace,” not within city limits.
Once arriving directly above the delivery location, the drone then lowers to the ground in the “private air column” extending above the property.
Delivery drones are already in service in Japan, where golfers can quickly summon more golf balls, or coolers of beer. At Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg reportedly uses a drone to escort fired employees off the premises.
City staff, maintaining that the law should prohibit weed delivery of any kind, is also concerned about safety. “There’s a very real danger,” said one department head. “As it leaves, there’s a good chance the first drone runs into the one bringing the pizza.”
