There’s no such thing as a ‘Face Mask Exempt’ card

The Department of Justice has urged the public to be aware of cards that purport to exempt the holder from Covid-19 face mask rules under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It’s a fake.

Here is an example of the cards — reportedly for sale online in bulk — that fraudulently use the DOJ seal.

Any similar postings, cards, and flyers were not issued by the Department of Justice and are not endorsed by the Department, according to a release from its North Carolina office

“Do not be fooled by the chicanery and misappropriation of the DOJ eagle,” said U.S. Attorney Tom Martin. “These cards do not carry the force of law. The ‘Freedom to Breathe Agency,’ or ‘FTBA,’ is not a government agency.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing cloth facial coverings in areas where social distancing guidelines may be difficult to maintain, especially in areas of significant community-based transition.

And be sure to wash your hands after handling any laminated cards handed to you by an angry stranger.
