Why do people have such a problem with laws made to protect them?

“I just hate them,” says one woman when asked why she refused to put one on. “I think I hate them because you have to wear them, and I think it’s more of a ‘you’ve got to wear it’, so I don’t want it.” It’s the sort of reasoning you might expect from protestors who refuse to wear masks during the pandemic: skepticism that they can save lives, and resentment about being told what to do by authorities. But in this survey, the subject wasn’t face masks — it was seat belts, long after wearing one became law.
An instructive look at why people resent laws made to save lives. A BBC report.
