Tributes at the altar

Posted on October 29, 2023 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Sonoma Community Center’s annual Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) activities culminate with an altar lighting and celebration on Thursday, November 2.

The outdoor altar, created by local sculptor Jim Callahan, will once again be adorned with lights, flowers, golden butterflies, and portrait tributes of community-member loved ones. (Photographs received at the Center by October 27 will be laminated and added to the altar.)

The evening begins with activities for children, the altar lighting at 6:30pm, and a 7pm performance by Grupo Folklórico Quetzalén, followed by a sampling of handmade tamales. The event and tamale dinner are free and open to the public.

Other Dia de Muertos activities at the Center include: gallery show by Jose Martinez; bilingual paint night (10/20); sugar skull decorating class (10/21); and a tamale-making workshop (10/22). See full schedule at sonomacommunitycenter.org.
