Posted on October 30, 2023 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Sonoma-Tokaj Sister City Committee presents a brief lecture and musical performances to honor the famous Hungarian composer with the November 4 evening. “The Musical Genius of Zoltán Kodály.”

Saturday, November 4, 4-6pm, Burlingame Hall, 252 West Spain Street, Sonoma. Suggested donation of $20.

Zoltán Kodály was the famous Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, teacher, and philosopher. He is well known internationally as the creator of the Kodály method of music education. The Sonoma -Tokaj Sister City Committee offers this program of brief lectures and musical performances to honor this famous Hungarian!

János Horváth, Professor Emeritus of Music, University of Calgary, will present Kodály’s life and accomplishments. He and Marni Strome, music educator and graduate of the Kodaly training, will describe the internationally known Kodaly Method of teaching music.

Also performing is the award-winning choral organization Young Musicians Chorus from Berkeley, lead by Betsy Marvit, conductor, and music educator. This cultural and musical event will close with a lovely piano piece by Kodály, played by Hyunjoo Chung, PhD of Musical Arts — who has performed across the US and Asia.

The Kodaly Method established a set of principles for music education which is still used today. This approach to music teaching is based on the musical mother tongue of the students—on their own folk music. This forms the starting point for learning musical literacy which eventually leads to an understanding and appreciation for music of all styles, genres, and cultures.

There will be complimentary light refreshments. Local wine is available for a $5 donation. To register: https://SonomaTokajEventNov4.eventbrite.com
