Standup at the Center

Posted on November 8, 2023 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Valley Laughs, a night of standup comedy, is coming to Sonoma Community Center on Friday, November 17, with headliner Joe Klocek (above), Clara Bijl, and host Cody Smit.

Presented in partnership with Smit Show Comedy, it’s a fundraising event for the Center.

The Rotary Community Kitchen will be transformed into the Pre Laugh Lounge and will open an hour before the 7:30pm performance. Adults 21+ may purchase libations and soft drinks will be available.

“I’ve loved standup comedy my whole life,” says Cat Smith, SCC marketing coordinator and co-organizer of the event. “There have been standup comedy nights around the valley and they’re fabulous, but nothing compares to the excitement and immersion of seeing a comedy show in a theatre.”

General admission ticket holders are welcome to choose from the open seating on the floor or balcony. To elevate the experience, VIP cabaret-style seating will be available at the front of the theater in groups of two or four. Each VIP ticket holder will be given three beverage tickets for redemption at the bar.

Raised in the midwest and then living two-plus decades in San Francisco, Joe Klocek considers himself a “square peg in a round hole.” With a long career in comedy, including an appearance on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, he currently runs two shows in the City: game show “Get It!?” at Cobb’s Comedy Club and Joe Klocek & Friends at the Punchline.

Clara Bijl is also a transplant to the Bay Area via a much longer journey. Born in France and raised in the Alps, she moved to South Carolina, USA to attend college at 18. Bijl claims to have learned English by listening to rap, and her comedic journey has brought her from New York to Los Angeles to Northern California. Her most recent comedy album is titled, “Welcome to Claradise.”

Cody Smit began his entertainment career as a rapper with the stage name C-Smitty. He soon realized that he was “tone-deaf and possessed no rhythm,” so Smit gave up that dream to pursue standup comedy, producing and hosting shows throughout Sonoma County.

Valley Laughs will take place in Andrews Hall, 276 East Napa St. Doors open to the Pre Laugh Lounge at 6:30 p.m. General Admission $20. VIP experiences available as cabaret-style tables for two at $150 (3 drink tickets per VIP included).

Tickets are on sale now at SonomaCommunityCenter.org or by calling the Center at 707-938-4626.
