Workers to picket Sonoma Mission Inn

Posted on November 6, 2023 by Sonoma Valley Sun

UNITE HERE Local 2 is calling for a picket line at the Sonoma Mission Inn on Friday, November 10, the latest action demanding a union contract.

Some 250 SMI workers and community supporters are expected to participate, said union spokesperson Ted Waechter, complete with “picket signs and bullhorns.”

Friday’s protest is called for 5pm-7pm in front of the Boyes Hot Springs property.

Pro-union workers hold a candlelight vigil, February 2023.

Rooms at the resort start at $619, while rooms at the Fairmont San Francisco start at $274, the union stated, “but housekeepers at the Fairmont Sonoma make $7.10/hour less than union housekeepers at the Fairmont San Francisco. Dishwashers make $7.01/hour less, and cooks make $7.81/hour less.”

UNITE HERE Local 2 is the hospitality workers’ union in the San Francisco Bay Area, representing 15,000 workers. It contends that when workers at the Fairmont Sonoma started organizing for good jobs, safety, and respect, the hotel responded with a vicious anti-union campaign.

In fact, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) found evidence sufficient to prosecute 43 alleged labor law violations related to the hotel’s union-busting campaign.

The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn is owned by Brookfield Asset Management and operated by Accor.
