Jack London young writers contest

Posted on March 10, 2024 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The winners of the 2023 Young Writers Contest at Jack London State Historic Park are first place winner Vivien Mossman of Kensington, CA, third place winner Ava Pillow of Vacaville, and guest speaker/local author Jeff Falconer.

Jack London State Historic Park has announced that the Ninth Annual Young Writers Contest theme will be the “Science Fiction Edition.”

Jack London is most famous for writing adventure stories but he also dabbled in science fiction. With stories like “Before Adam,” “Star Rover,” and “The Scarlet Plague,” London explored themes like multiple dimensions, time travel and post-apocalyptic societies.

Students entering this year’s contest are instructed to write a short story involving a mysterious portal into a parallel universe. Complete contest rules, and the entry form is available at https://jacklondonpark.com/annual-young-writers-contest/.

The Young Writers Contest encourages middle school students (grades 6-8) to exercise their writing skills by creating an original 1,500-2,000-word story inspired by the works of Jack London.

The contest closes at 11:59pm on March 31, 2024, and winners will be announced by May 1.

The prizes are $200 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place.  The contest is judged blindly by a panel of volunteers (not employees of Jack London Park Partners).

“Even 148 years after his birth, Jack London still has much in common with the young writers of today – imagination, curiosity, creativity,” said Matt Leffert, executive director of Jack London State Historic Park.
