A Book Study: Changes in Evangelical Churches from the Moral Majority (1979) through 2024

Posted on April 2, 2024 by Sonoma Sun

Beginning April 10, join Curran Reichert, Pastor of the First Congregational Church, for an online study based on the book The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism, by Tim Alberta, a staff writer for The Atlantic.

Raised in an Evangelical family (his father was an Evangelical pastor), Tim watched the religious upbringing of his childhood, one he cherished, change from a Scripture based church to a politicized organization. His deep knowledge of  his faith combined with interviews with today’s pastors and parishioners, he provides help understanding how this happened. If you plan on participating you will need a copy of the book. Scholarships are available through Curran Reichert, Pastor of the First Congregational Church.

Wednesday 12-1 p.m. April 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15. Contact the Congregational Church 707-996-1328 or email: [email protected] for the Zoom connection.

  1. I am reading this book now. Pastor Curran recommended it to me. Though I cannot take part in the study group, due to prior commitments, I really recommend this book. So far it has been eye opening and I have learned so much. Some of us assume we understand religious nationalism and extremism, but in fact there is much many of us do not know. Pastor Curran read and gave me insight and edits for my last column, a Tale of Two Churches. I thank her sincerely.
