Council member Sandra Lowe reflects on her attendance at the Democratic National Convention

The Sun reached out to City Council member Sandra Lowe, a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, to get her thoughts and reactions to the nearly week-long event.

“I joined 20,000 delegates, reporters, electeds, tech millionaires and activists into jampacked United Center- the home of basketball hero Michael Jordan. From the first gavel I witnessed an historical and rejuvenating changing of the guard. I really felt an injection of enthusiasm and, yes, “joy” that I never thought possible.

Days later I was still reeling from the incredible energy: the energy to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz swelled speaker after speaker, musical guest after musical guest: Stevie Wonder, Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama, Steve Kerr, Sheilia E and John Legend; and how about the Mankato High School state champion football team! All on prime-time TV. The enthusiasm was palpable.  My mother sent me screenshots of me from MSNBC.  I had many texts from enthusiastic Sonomans.  I screamed and danced, hugged friends and strangers, yes, came home with COVID but would do it again.

There are now 70 or so days until November 6th and if everyone in Chicago takes even part of this new energy back to their home states, I think we will see get a fresher and more compassionate group of public servants occupying the White House and halls of Congress. I am feeling optimistic but the realist in me knows that we are still the underdog.   But when we fight, we win.  It seems like folks are up for the fight.”
