City Council to review changes in General Plan land use today at 2pm

The Sonoma City Council is holding a special meeting today at 2pm to review progress on the 2045 Sonoma General Plan. Among the topics is a discussion of land use changes and proposals to increase density in some residential zones.

Sonoma’s Planning Commission held a similar meeting a month ago, and the commission’s recommendations will also be presented.

The consultant preparing the report, notes that density limits in Sonoma are lower than those in comparable cities and suggests some be raised to facilitate the creation of more housing. In its meeting, the Planning Commission agreed, and recommended upping the number of units allowed per acre in Medium, High Density and Housing Opportunity zones. In addition, the creation of Affordable Housing Overlays was recommended to incentivize development.

The allowance of duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes in residential zones was also recommended, but only with revision of the Development Code that regulates height and square footage allowed on nay given parcel.

Some property owners have requested re-zoning of their land, and those requests will also be discussed.

The special meeting takes place in the Council Meeting room on 1st Street West and is open to the public.
