Don’t Call 911: Prescribed burn planned at Sonoma Valley Regional Park

Sonoma County Regional Parks is planning a prescribed burn at Sonoma Valley Regional Park in Glen Ellen on Dec. 11 and 12.

Fire crews will burn approximately 14 acres starting as early as 10 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Smoke may be visible around the area. This is a permitted controlled burn. Do not call 911.

The burn will take place west of Highway 12, surrounding the parking lot. The park will remain open, though visitors may experience smoky conditions in some areas. For updates on this and other Regional Parks prescribed burns, download the Watch Duty app and:

Prescribed burns are carefully planned and must meet strict criteria for ecological benefit, weather parameters, smoke management and fire safety guidelines. (The planned date is subject to last-minute changes due to these considerations.) When all conditions are met, trained fire personnel conduct the burn while monitoring the set criteria, fire behavior and designated fire control lines.

This prescribed burn has been planned and coordinated with the Bay Area Air Quality Control District to minimize the smoke impacts on surrounding communities.

This project is largely supported by Parks for All – Measure M, a local sales tax that supports Sonoma County’s regional and city parks. For more information on how Regional Parks uses low-intensity prescribed fire as a landscape management tool, visit SoCoParks.org/Fire.
