Mapping the City’s Urban Tree Canopy is also part of the Tree Inventory project
The value of trees in our community used to be considered a matter of aesthetics, but today the role of trees in reducing “heat islands” and carbon capture is well recognized. State mandates about hardscape shading and CO2 reduction have combined with pedestrian benefits and enjoyment of the urban experience, and a fuller understanding of the importance of trees has emerged.
The City of Sonoma is currently seeking proposals from qualified individuals or firms to conduct a comprehensive tree inventory, data reporting, and mapping of the urban tree canopy. This project aims to assess and expand the city’s urban tree shade canopy to improve climate resilience and urban landscapes.
Proposal Overview:
The selected consultant will be responsible for:
- Conducting a street tree inventory across public properties.
- Classifying citywide land cover using recent aerial imagery.
- Mapping and reporting on tree canopy coverage and potential planting areas.
Key Deadlines:
- Proposal Submission Deadline: January 14, 2024, by 5:00 p.m.
- Inquiries Deadline: December 18, 2024.
- Proposals should be submitted to Jacob Dunn, Associate Planner, at jdunn@sonomacity.org.
