A meeting of Sonoma City Council on Monday, December 14, 6 p.m. may (at last) clear the way for a retail cannabis outlet. See the agenda and find out how to view the meeting remotely, at CivicWeb Portal.
In August, the city awarded its exclusive cannabis retail license to SPARC, a company that currently operates locations in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, and three in San Francisco. It plans to open at 19315 Sonoma Highway, the site of several Mexican restaurants over the years, sometime next year.
But securing a license in the town of Sonoma, which has been marked in its caution to allow cannabis businesses, was no simple matter. The process began over two years ago as the city progressed slowly on developing an ordinance, which set a maximum of one retail storefront within city limits.
The city went on record against a cannabis initiative that was publicly placed on the November ballot. It lost.
That left standing the city’s application process which began in January, culminating in the August decision. But even that decision was second-guessed by councilmembers, effectively delaying the formal approval that is set for another vote Monday night.
One change on the council since then: Jack Ding now holds the seat occupied by previous no-voter David Cook.
The items to be considered on the regular calendar are:
- Initiation of a Multi-Year Recreation and Park Work Plan including the Appointment of a Community Recreation and Parks Task Force
- Resolution to Award a Conditional Certificate (CC) to SOPARC LLC that allows it to Make Application for and Obtain a Commercial Cannabis Business Permit to Establish a Retail Store-front Commercial Cannabis Business
- 6-month Contract Extension for School Resource Officer Services in Cost-Sharing Partnership with Sonoma County and SVUSD
