The rites of backstage passage

A path to a successful acting career? For young performers in Broadway Bound Kids, it just might be the yellow brick road.

Directed by Jeanie Borchelt and Paulino Duran, the colorful production of The Wizard of Oz played to packed houses last week at the Veterans Building. The aspiring actors learned, from first audition to frenzied dress rehearsal to final standing ovation, that it’s hard work making theatrical magic. Of course, a click of ruby red slippers never hurt.

For kids and crew, working together to create something special formed unique bonds. The music and laughter and camaraderie made wonderful memories – if not highlights on the resume.

They put on costumes and make-up, got into character and hit their marks. The rising curtain revealed the final goal, a realm of creativity and imagination. One that left the everyday – not to mention Kansas – somewhere far, far away …
