What better way to come together — the community, members of the local slow food movement and the delegation from Cittaslow headquarters in Italy — than over a bowl of nice hot soup. Sonoma has been designated as the first Cittaslow city in the U.S. (see story on page 28) and the celebration begins with a modest, locally grown and leisurely enjoyed (all molto Cittaslow) $5 soup dinner on Wednesday night, Jan. 27, at the Sonoma Community Center. First-come, first-served, 5 to 6:00 p.m. with wines from Sonoma Home Winemakers and klezmer music from Simka.

From a tiny fruit a mighty culinary legend grows. Saturday night, local chefs, winemakers and olive oil producers join forces to prepare a four-course feast for each long, candlelit table of guests. The 3rd annual Sonoma Environmental Film Festival, Jan. 22-24, presents 50 films with a focus on green building, organic and biodynamic agriculture, the oceans, water conservation, eco activism and renewable energy. Also on the schedule: panels, discussions and themed receptions, such as the Greek food party to accompany the opening night film, A Touch of Spice (pictured). $10, $8 for seniors and students.
