Garden parties, every day is Arbor Day

The trees of Sonoma Plaza

In the Sonoma Plaza, with its 60 species of trees, every day is Arbor Day. Tom Rusert of Sonoma has created a map for “self guided” tree tours of the Plaza, including the many trees commemorating important events in Sonoma and California history.

The Sonoma Valley Woman’s Club, one of the first community organizations to beautify the square, began to document the rich history of its trees in 1901.

“Very few experiences in wine country can rival a leisurely morning walk beneath our majestic and historic plaza trees,” said Rusert, co-founder of the annual Arbor Day celebration launched by proclamation last year. “This eight-acre arboretum is filled with amazing treasures that personify Sonoma’s roots.”

Arbor Day addition

Until Thursday’s planting and dedication, John Trueblood of the city parks department tree keeps an eye on the tree selected for the Arbor Day celebration. The Coast Redwood will be planted in the southeast quadrant of Sonoma Plaza, near the rose garden, in an 11 a.m. ceremony. The tree, which could someday top 300 feet, will be the new holiday tree for Hospice by the Bay’s annual tree lighting.,

Garden party at the Community Center

Volunteers are putting the final touches on the new demonstration garden at the Sonoma Community Center, which will officially open Saturday, March 13 with an Arbor Day Celebration and Garden Dedication.
The garden, which will encompass over 4,000 square feet, has been taking shape since June under the direction of volunteer Master Gardeners. The goal: demonstrate the principles of water conservation and provide a hands-on educational resource, all in a beautiful, inviting setting.

The day starts at 9 a.m garden work party – volunteers appreciated! At 11 a.m., the garden partners will be recognized and, at 11:30 a.m., the garden will be dedicated in honor of the Maloney Family. The community picnic kicks off in the grden at noon, weather permitting.
