Dragons win to stay unbeaten

The Sonoma Dragons overcame a slow start and a lingering rain to defeat the Maria Carrillo Pumas 22-13 Saturday in Santa Rosa.
Trailing 7-0 after the first quarter, the Dragons scored on the first play of the second quarter, a 43-yard touchdown pass from Jake Powers to fellow junior Steven Filippi. Sonoma took the lead for good on a 32-yard field goal by specialist Devon McCauley, and later in the second quarter got an 18-yard run by Jayce Ray to go up 15-7 at halftime.
Matt Darnell, returning from a concussion the previous week, dashed in from eight yards out with 6:35 left in the third quarter for the final Dragon points. Maria Carrillo added a third quarter touchdown, but both teams failed to score in the final stanza and the game ended with Sonoma up 22-13.
Ray finished with 52 yards on 11 carries and Powers completed 10 passes good for 185 yards and a touchdown. The Dragon defense did not allow a pass completion in the second or third quarters.
The win improves the Dragons’ record to 2-0-1 as they head into league play this week against Healdsburg. The kickoff time for Friday night’s home game against the Greyhounds is 7:30 p.m. at Arnold Field.
