Schools in step for Walk to School Day

Prestwood Elementary School in Sonoma will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 6 as some 250 students walk or bike to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. with kids, parents and community leaders from various meeting spots. Other special activities associated with the walk include education about the importance of being active in our children’s daily lives, safety, poster making, bike decorating, and prizes.

In the U.S., International Walk to School Day is expected to include 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world.

Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
The Prestwood PTO in conjunction with the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition organized the event as part of the Safe Routes to School movement, and the larger International Walk to School campaign (iWalk), to promote importance of fitness and activity. For more, contact Caroline Brown at 320.3515
