Juliette Gordon Low would be proud. The Girl Scouts of America are celebrating 100 years this year and Sonoma scouts are joining the party in a big way. The goal, plant 100 trees for the 100th anniversary.
Two tree planting events have already taken place at Altimira Middle School and Sonoma Charter School. Many more are scheduled throughout the spring and the ultimate objective is to have the scouts work with community members to plant at least one tree at each school, as well as one tree in a city park, at a county site like the regional park, at a local business, community church and at a local preserve like Bouverie Preserve. The goal also includes having each girl scout personally plant at least one tree.
“We planted some wonderful fruit trees at the middle school and 20 more trees at Sonoma Charter. The girls are having a great time and the community has really come out to show their support,” said Joyce Carlson, treasurer of Sonoma Valley Service Unit 103 and the Girl Scout’s 100 Tree Project coordinator for the Valley.
Upcoming tree planting dates are as follows.
March 24: Troops will plant twelve oak trees on a private Seventh Street East property.
March 25 or March 26 (TBD): Tom Rusert of Sonoma Birding teams up with the Girls Scouts and Teresa Raffo of Cornerstone for a science, birding, gardening and tree planting celebration.
March 31: Troops will plant fruit trees and oak/dogwoods: at Hanna Boys Center.
April 2: Five fruit trees will be planted at Trinity Episcopal Church.
April 30: Troops will transplant oak tree seedlings at Bouverie Preserve (second of two April sessions where Girl Scouts first monitored oak seedlings).
Date TBA: Two oak trees will be planted at Larson Park.
There are additional tree planting opportunities for both the Girl Scouts and the community including all of the local schools in the district as well as Maxwell Park and Sonoma Garden Park. A commemoration celebration in late spring, early summer will conclude the tree planting project.
“This has been a great experience so far. The community has been really supportive of our project and the Girl Scouts themselves have jumped on the tree planting wagon. We’re ready to start digging,” said Carlson.
The Girl Scouts welcome any and all volunteers as well as sponsors for both trees and irrigation materials. For more information, contact Joyce Carlson at 938.2406 or iamcarlson@sbcglobal.net.
