The Sonoma Valley Rotary Club’s 15th annual Jim Thrower Rotary Middle School Writers’ Faire has once again produced the best of the best middle school writing winners of 2010.
Each year, writing-faire founder Kathy Eschleman and co-organizer Cathy Wedell encourage all the Valley’s middle school teachers to submit their students’ best works in the categories of fiction; persuasive essay; serious and humorous poetry; original song; personal narrative; book, CD and movie review; biography; descriptive writing; and comic.
Entries are submitted to the judges with all names and schools removed. Judges – who select first, second, third and honorable mention – are comprised of local authors, and this year included Kathleen Hill, Lilla and Andy Weinberger, Rebecca Lawton, Rose Murphy and Pam Gibson.
The winners and their families were honored at the Writing Faire Celebration held on May 25, at the Lodge at Sonoma. “As always, the Lodge went above and beyond to make this event a success,” said Eschleman.
The winning writers receive gift certificates from Readers’ Books and Best Buy. Also, donations of corsages for the student master and mistress of ceremonies came from Bancroft Flowers.
Eschleman also praised others who help make the faire a success including, “The teachers who encouraged their students to become involved; my right-hand person, Cathy Wedell; and of course, the Rotary Club. Without all of them, this event would not happen.”
This is the first year where all schools in the valley participated in the faire, a tribute to the teachers of Sonoma.
