Bouverie Preserve’s Project GROW kicked off its third year this past November. Students from Sonoma Valley High School planted 230 oak woodland understory plants including Toyon, Sticky Monkeyflower, California honeysuckle and Wood Rose. The plants were planted in two-meter square plots so that ACR staff, students and volunteers can monitor the plots for survival rates. The students’ plots each contained 10 plants – two Toyon, four California Honeysuckle, two Sticky Monkeyflower, and two Wood Rose. Rice straw was then placed in the plots to help keep weeds out, keep moisture in, and keep roots warm over the next few winter months.
Project GROW is a unique partnership between Audubon Canyon Ranch, the Southern Sonoma County Resource Conservation District, and the Center for Land-Based Learning’s SLEWS Program to restore 8 acres of oak woodlands at ACR’s Bouverie Preserve in Glen Ellen.
