The Sonoma-based Flying Lizard Motorsports race team continues to lead the way in both driver and team championships in the American Le Mans Series with just four races left in the 2008 season.
Flying Lizard secured its seventh straight podium finish on Aug. 9 at Road America in Wisconsin as the No. 45 Porsche of Joerg Bergmeister and Wolf Henzler finished second. Overall, the team placed three cars in the top 10 – the No. 46 of Johannes van Overbeek and Patrick Pilet finished fourth, and the No. 44 of Seth Neiman and Darren Law finished seventh.
The efforts helped Flying Lizard extend its lead in the GT2-class driver and team championships. They are now 18 points ahead of Tafel Racing in the team championship, and Bergmeister and Henzler are seven points ahead of the second-place competitors in the driver championship.
“Finishing ahead of the No. 71 was critical for the championship points for the team and for the No. 45,” said Bergmeister. “It was a nail-biter at the end but Wolf (Henzler) managed to get by and we widened our lead in the championship. Now we are looking forward to Mosport (Canada): it’s another great track and should be a really exciting race.”
This marks the fifth consecutive ALMS season for the Infineon Raceway-based team. Since its first year of competition in 2004, the team has finished in the top three in the GT2 team and drivers’ championships, but has not yet won the GT2 title. In 2007, the team was second in the ALMS GT2 team championship and drivers Johannes van Overbeek and Joerg Bergmeister finished second in the ALMS GT2 drivers’ championship.
The Flying Lizard team makes its only Northern California appearance at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the season-ending Monterey Sports Car Championships on Oct. 18.
