Continuing its “Chapel Concert Series” of Latin-themed musical selections, the Sonoma/Petaluma State Historic Park Association presents the sonorous vocal stylings of Ramana Vieira as she interprets traditional Portuguese fado ballads. The song form, developed in 19th-century Portugal, takes its name from the Portuguese term for “fate,” and is characterized by melancholic narratives of love and longing – well-suited for Vieira’s critically lauded voice, which has been called both “breathtaking and intoxicating.”
Raised in the East Bay city of San Leandro, Vieira is the daughter of Portuguese immigrants from the Madeira Island. She discovered her love of performance at a young age, and received formal training at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater. International tours and critical acclaim followed, including a recent request to donate a private concert to a silent auction in honor of Aretha Franklin and the 2008 Grammy Awards 50th anniversary, which benefited the Recording Academy charity, Music Cares. Vieira’s last appearance in Sonoma was at the Salute to the Arts festival.
As with the previous Chapel Concerts, Vieira’s appearance will be presented at the Sonoma Mission Chapel, just off the historic Sonoma Plaza. LaSalette Restaurant, Sonoma’s own purveyor of Portuguese cuisine, will extend its evening hours to accommodate after-concert diners.
Vieira’s fado performance begins at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24 at the Sonoma Mission Chapel, 114 E. Spain St., Sonoma. Tickets are $15 and can be ordered by calling 707.935.6832. or at SonomaParks.org. La Salette Restaurant is at 452 First St. E. # H Sonoma.
