All hail the slow cooker.
It has served me well since my early 20s and is a gift I advise for anyone shopping for the fledgling home cook in their lives.
As a night owl, I tend to prepare my slow cooker at night, being lured to sleep by the smell of slow cooking comfort food, only to wake up to find the meal ready for separation into smaller portions for lunch and dinner.
From coq au vin to macaroni and cheese, no-knead bread and brownies, anything is possible with a good slow cooker.
My preferred brand is the Crock-Pot Programmable Cook & Carry ($49.99). I have a 6-quart, which is perfect for a meal for 2 with leftovers or a meal for 4 without leftovers. I even cook a chicken in it! Yes people, a chicken!
It has a lid that enables you to safely transport it to parties and events, avoiding spillage. It’s programmable, from 30 minutes to 20 hours of cooking and also keeps your food warm after it’s cooking time is complete.
