Selfie-friendly monument to honor Vallejo

General Mariano Vallejo will return to his Sonoma spread in perpetuity, in the form of a life-size statue bronze gazing out across the Plaza and across Spain Street, if a city committee okays the plan Thursday night.

The Cultural & Fine Arts Commission will consider the installation of a new work by Sonoma artist Jim Callahan. A former Sonoma Treasure Artist, Callahan has created a scale model of the sculpture, which depicts Vallejo sitting on a park bench.

Architect Michael Ross made the plan for the placement site, an area of stone pavers close to the sidewalk along Spain Street, north of City Hall. The tableau has Vallejo, in contemplative repose, facing the location of his former home, Casa Grande.

The monument would come to the city as a gift of pubic art from the General Vallejo Monument Committee. The goal is to unveil the finished statue during festivities on July 4, 2016, as July 4 was Vallejo’s birthday.

The January 28 public CFAC meeting will be held in the City Hall Conference Room at 5:30 p.m.
