A 41-year-old Penngrove woman and a 53-year-old California Highway Patrol officer were taken by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital last Thursday morning after she swerved into his lane, causing a head-on collision on Carneros Highway about 100 yards from the Schell Vista Fire Protection District’s main fire station.
Both vehicles were traveling between 50 m.p.h. and 60 m.p.h., said a statement from the California Highway Patrol.
The officer, Robert Stewart, had a concussion and a cut arm and was treated and released, said CHP information officer Gerald Rico. The other driver, Yvonne Earlywine, suffered a broken leg, ruptured spleen and broken ribs.
Both Stewart and Earlywine were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be cut out by fire fighters who heard the crash and responded immediately.
She was driving a 1999 Dodge Caravan mini-van. He was in a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria patrol vehicle. Both Earlywine and Officer Stewart were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
The highway was closed until almost 1 p.m.
