The bean counters continue to tabulate, and early indications promise a banner year for Sonoma’s annual cancer-fighting fundraiser Relay for Life. Held over a 24-hour interval on Saturday, Relay organizers estimate this year’s total brought in $42,000 more than last year’s donation total of $216,000. And they haven’t even finished counting yet.
Celebrating the Relay’s tenth anniversary were hundreds of dedicated locals draped in purple, circling the high school track in fundraising teams throughout the night. First-place finishers Peterson Mechanical Inc. single-handedly raised a total of $24,250, according to event chair Kathleen Amormino.
In an effort to help walkers keep one foot in front of the other, KSVY 91.3 Sonoma provided midday music, and featured a block of time for personal dedications to honor loved ones affected by cancer.
One hundred percent of monies raised by the Relay for Life tradition benefits the American Cancer Society, which set a cumulative national goal of $34.5 million from the nearly 3000 separate Relays staged across the country this year.
