Bridge closing tonight

If you’re planning to get away this holiday weekend, you might want to consider heading north&#46The Oakland/San Francisco Bay Bridge will be completely closed to traffic Labor Day weekend, beginning tonight at 8p.m.

Despite having spent nearly a million-dollars in the last six months to educate the public about the planned closure and repairs, transit officials are expecting heavy congestion on Highway 101 in Marin and San Francisco and on Highway 92 at both ends of the San Mateo Bridge.

Construction crews are slated to demolish and replace a 350-foot stretch of the bridge just east of the Yerba Buena Tunnel, reopening the bridge early Tuesday morning in time for the commute.

Alternate transportation in and out of the city is highly encouraged, with public transport schedules beefed up and underwritten by Caltrans. Limited overnight BART service will be available, and ferry companies have scheduled additional boats.
