The Sonoma Dragons defeated the El Molino Lions 41-13 Friday night in Forestville to capture their first league victory of the 2007 season. With the win, the Dragons improve to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the SCL. The victory sets up a meeting with first-place Casa Grande this Friday night at Arnold Field, with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
The Dragons got another solid rushing night from senior Matt Darnell (113 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries) and two spectacular plays from junior Steven Filippi to break the game open.
Filippi scored twice in the second quarter, his first touchdown coming on an electrifying 75-yard punt return. The elusive junior scored later in the quarter on a 67-yard pass reception from quarterback Jake Powers.
The Dragons led 27-0 at halftime and got key contributions from many reserves in the second half. Powers finished the night with an efficient nine completions (on 14 attempts), good for 149 yards. The Dragon defense held the Lions to only 55 yards rushing and allowed the only El Molino points after the outcome was clearly decided.
Junior linebacker Michael Mulas turned in another stellar performance that included a key deflection on a fourth-down try early in the contest and a jarring tackle that caused a fumble. Mulas also scored the Dragons’ first touchdown of the evening, a one-yard burst.
