The long-anticipated expansion of Parkpoint Health Club in the Maxwell Village shopping center is nearing completion. Stacks of shiny metal weights and strength training machines have replaced the racks of freshly laundered clothes in the space Maxwell Cleaners occupied, and the soundtracks once heard in the Blockbuster space have been exchanged for the rhythmic thumping of tennis shoes on treadmills.
The new sections being added by Parkpoint were contingent upon taking over the spaces that housed Blockbuster and Maxwell Cleaners. Blockbuster closed the Maxwell Village store this year and Maxwell Cleaners moved its operations across the parking lot next to Rite Aid. Immediately after those changes, remodeling began on the 1600-square-foot ground floor area. The room now contains strength training machines, free weights and treadmills.
General manager Jennifer Anderson explained the club’s expansion plans, noting that Parkpoint does not intend to use the added space to increase membership, which numbers approximately 1000 currently. “We wanted to add room and new equipment in order to be able to give our members a better experience when they are exercising at the club. The new configuration means we can have more class options and offer the best possible systems for strength and fitness training.”
The strength training section now features all new free weights, six new treadmills with personal TV screens and headphones, resistance training equipment and a free motion cable machine that can be customized to replicate a golf swing or other movement. The floor is made from a substance converted from recycled tires; frosted windows let in natural light.
The upper floor is still under construction and in addition to the current group exercise room there will be a new 1200-square-foot group exercise space, a 900-square-foot indoor cycling studio with a total of 20 bikes, and a Pilates Reformer studio.
Parkpoint has also enlarged the childcare room, where members can bring their children to stay while they go to an exercise class; the club also plans to add to the children’s fitness programs.
