Jack O’Connell announced yesterday that 251 teachers in California had earned National Board Certification this year from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. This brings the total number of California teachers who have achieved this distinction to 3,878, now including Sonoma’s own Kevin Evans.
Evans has taught for many years in Sonoma Valley and has served as the president of the local teachers’ union, the Valley of the Moon Teachers Association. She presently teaches at El Verano Elementary School.
Said O’Connell, “This certification is a great honor for educators because it means they went through a rigorous review process to determine they possess advanced teaching skills. In our quest to narrow the achievement gap and to prepare all students for a challenging future, we need highly effective teachers who are passionate about their profession.”
National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize great teachers, reward them, and make them better. The certification process can take several years to complete.
