On Saturday morning, at about 8:50 a.m., Sonoma Police officers were summoned to the Nathanson Creek area behind Sonoma Valley High School, where a man was reportedly screaming for help.
The 55-year-old Sonoma man had been walking his three Labrador retrievers when one of the dogs went into the storm-swollen creek. The man attempted to assist his dog but lost his footing and fell into the swiftly moving water. He was able to get to the creek bank where a passer-by helped anchor him there. Moments later, several members of the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball team arrived, formed a human-chain down the creek bank and hoisted the man out of the creek to safety.
The man, who was wet and cold, and had suffered a slight head laceration, was treated and released at the scene by paramedics. The Labrador made it out of the creek unscathed.
