Final Comments from Candidates

The Sun asked each of the twelve candidates for local office if they had any final comments to the local voters, especially since the ballot statements were submitted several months ago. Responses were limited to 50 words, with another 25 words to answer the question, “If you were an animal, what would you be and why?” Here they are, in their own words.

DISTRICT 1 COUNTY SUPERVISOR

Will Pier 65 Ecologist, Teacher, former contractor
“I would be the hovering White-tailed Kite. An intense, tireless hunter, it has clear, long-range perspective on its surroundings.”

“I, Will Pier, will address the following urgent needs with long-term plans: sound fiscal policy and economic growth; community safety for all; and environmental sustainability. I will promote green business and building, create programs for at-risk youth, revive mental health care services, support agriculture and open-space, and conserve our water.”

Valerie Brown 62 Incumbent
“As the daughter of a zoologist, I learned to appreciate the value and worth of all animals – impossible to choose.”

“As this election process draws to a close, I appreciate the geniality which has been the hallmark of the First District race. Talking with folks, particularly those who do not ordinarily contact my office, has been a joy. I value your input, and appreciate your support.”

SONOMA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION

Alex Bantis Retired Teacher
“The Lion! Excellent Board Members must exhibit the characteristics of the Lion – Tenacious, Powerful, Courageous, Noble, and Team Workers.”

“Biggest challenges facing education today. 1. A teacher shortage is looming. Need to explore alternative forms of compensation such as signing bonus and assistance with housing. 2. Need to create opportunities for all students to reach their individual potentials. Focus on career education concepts as part of total the curriculum.”

John Musilli Incumbent
“I’d be a mountain lion. They’re kind of stealthful, and they always get their way.”

“My support of our local public schools began in 1972 when my family settled in Sonoma Valley and our children were enrolled at Flowery, Altimira and Sonoma High. Since 1992, you have allowed me to represent you as a member of the Sonoma County Board of Education. Thank you.”

SONOMA VALLEY HEALTH CARE DISTRICT

Madolyn Agrimonti 61 Director of Advancement
“A good listener, I have been compared to a lion assessing from the tall grass. My decisions are well thought out but immediate when necessary.“

“Experience counts! It is imperative that the residents of the hospital district have a seismically safe facility with emergency services. These services will be my number one priority if elected to the Sonoma Valley Hospital Health Care District Board. A vote for me is a vote for the hospital’s future.

Bill Gurry 52 Healthcare Engineering Consultant /Power Generation Consultant
“An elephant’s strength and size inspire respect, but they don’t abuse their power. They are adaptable, live off the land and have no natural enemies.”

“My background is hospital consulting, including an engineering degree, MBA and direct knowledge of our hospital. This experience benefits the Hospital Board to make those important decisions necessary for the future of our hospital, including retrofitting the building infrastructure and ensuring that our hospital remains solvent. I’d appreciate your vote.”

Bill Boerum 65 Board Member-Health Care Advocate
“A fox, because a fox is sly.”

“As I have served on the board of the JPA, it’s clear we need to see ourselves as part of something larger, in terms of doctor retention and recruitment, but also in technical areas, such as electronic medical records. That’s available only if we’re part of a larger system.”

Peter Hohorst 72 Manufacturing Engineer/Consultant
“My selection is a Border collie, an intelligent dog breed. It strives to get everyone together and encourages them to reach a common goal.”

“After more than 20 years in this great Valley, my wife and I have become increasingly concerned about our hospital’s future and its services, upon which we all depend. Based on my professional experience and community service, I believe I can make a positive contribution to preserve this vital institution.”

VALLEY OF THE MOON FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT

Elissa Wadleigh 28 Fire/Casualty Insurance Agent
“A Bear: Bears exhibit two sides, an intense, powerful side and a sensitive, intelligent side. While being cute, they fight for things that they value.”

“I was raised in a family that focused on giving back to the community. This is a way to bring together my experience as a Fire Insurance Agent with my passion for community service. My generation needs to step up and continue the legacy of those in leadership before us.”

Bill Norton 65 Incumbent

“[not available]”

Board member since 2003. Retired Lieutenant, San Francisco Fire Department after 30 years experience. Assisted in development of Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue Authority’s “Standards of Coverage,” a business plan for our combined Fire Departments. Past certified Fire Training Officer, Fire Safety Director, EMT and Urban Search & Rescue

Dawn Mittleman Fire and EMS Firm, Senior Consultant
“A bird, can focus on fine details (ground level) or the big picture (skyward). Solutions are often found by changing how we view a problem.”

“We appreciate the endorsement of Sonoma Valley Fire Fighters for the three incumbents. The fire fighters know the importance of our proven, stable leadership. We have worked hard as a team (firefighters, volunteers, administration and board members) to enhance service, reduce costs and adopt innovative programs to address future challenges.”

Ray Brunton 67 Businessman
“I’d be a cat. Cats have minds of their own, they’re affectionate and they take care of themselves. Everybody likes cats.”

“Years ago I decided to join the Board of Directors to work as a watchdog on spending and to develop the finest fire rescue and medical response service we can. No politician, at any level, should have anything other than public service in mind – no personal agenda, no special recognition.”
