Monitoring the election results at SVTV Race ’08 headquarters, the Sun called Measure P a winner less than 2 hours after the polls closed. With 71 percent voters in favor and 13 percent opposed in last week’s Sun poll, victory was expected, and it took returns from only a few precincts to warrant the call.
Measure Q was declared a winner about half an hour later, as the Marin County results took shape. The quarter-cent sales tax in the SMART train district needs 66.7 percent of the combined vote in BOTH counties, and as with Measure R in 2006, Sonoma County voters approved the idea and voters in Marin County did not. But since there are far more voters in Sonoma, the NO vote again in Marin was overtaken this year by the YES vote in Sonoma.
