Tomorrow, a DUI checkpoint will be placed at an unknown location inside the Sonoma city limits as part of California’s effort to keep drunk drivers off the road.
Thanks to a program called “Avoid the 13” that started on Dec. 12, DUIs are down 33 percent in Sonoma County from this time last year. Sonoma’s police department will take part in the program when they set up their checkpoint tomorrow.
Santa Rosa police sergeant Doug Schlief said that 43 people have been arrested so far this year – an improvement over 2007, when 57 drunk drivers had been arrested at this point in the program.
“Avoid the 13” is one of 42 programs put in place by the California Office of Traffic Safety that are being conducted across the state in association with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
