City government reaches out to local auto dealers

The future viability of the American auto industry is becoming increasingly tenuous. But Sonoma’s auto dealers may have a “softer landing” than most — thanks to our proactive city government.
Acknowledging potential local impacts of negative economic news trickling down from the big three automakers’ bailout, Sonoma City Manager Linda Kelly reflected, “In these unprecedented economic times it behooves the city to reach out to local auto dealers, and see how they are doing,”
This outreach is taking the form of meetings by Kelly and Mayor Ken Brown with all four Sonoma auto dealers, in an effort to develop mutually beneficial strategic plans.
According to the city manager, the preliminary discussions have been productive and transparent, with the dealers sharing confidential information. She characterized the outcomes as “eye-opening” — in general, local dealers are experiencing a microcosm of the automakers’ plight — paring back operating expenses, including employee layoffs.
Kelly noted that economic development programs are available to auto dealers, should they decide to pursue this option. She outlined the benefits of providing incentives to local enterprises, including retention of tax revenues, and the opportunity for residents to contribute to the city’s economic vitality by both purchasing and obtaining service from local, reputable businesses.
The city manager reminds residents, “It does make a difference when you buy locally.” She urges prospective customers intent on shopping around to “Come to Sonoma first and last,” and provide local businesses an opportunity to match out-of-town deals.
According to Kelly, dialogue is scheduled to continue over the coming weeks, with the goal of a win-win situation for the city, businesses, and residents alike.
