Pending Board approval, Esmeralda Sanchez Moseley has been selected as the new Principal for Flowery Elementary School, starting in the fall. Moseley will replace current Principal Joyce Schipper, who will be retiring at the end of this school year. It is anticipated that the Board will take action on the hiring of Moseley at its meeting next Tuesday, May 12.
At Dunbar, principal Claudia Berkman (see photo) announced that she will be resigning at the end of this school year, which is Berkman’s first as the principal at Dunbar. The district is in the initial stages of seeking a replacement for her position.
“We are disappointed that Claudia is moving on,” said Ashley Halliday, director of human resources for the district. Berkman has stepped down in order to look for a full time principal position. According to Halliday, the Dunbar position is and has been less than full time for a number of years.
As for Moseley, Halliday said that the district is lucky to be hiring a principal of this quality. “Esmeralda was offered positions in other districts so we’re very pleased she accepted the job at Flowery.”
Moseley has served for the past three years as the vice principal at three elementary schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District. Prior to her work in Pleasanton, Moseley served as a literacy specialist with Aspire Public Schools in Oakland, and with Literacy Connection Incorporated. In those roles Moseley focused on working with teachers and principals as a professional development expert in several areas, including the area of English Language Acquisition. Moseley began her teaching career as a bilingual teacher in the Central Valley communities of West Sacramento and Galt, teaching third, fourth and fifth grades.
Raised in a Spanish-speaking home, Moseley learned English in school. As a result of her own experiences learning a second language, Moseley is excited about the prospect of working at a magnet school for Two-Way Immersion.
