Young collision victim’s condition upgraded

The condition of Glen Ellen’s Brad Dreyer, the 20-year-old injured last week while riding a skateboard on West Spain Street, has been upgraded from critical to serious at Santa Rosa’s Memorial Hospital, where he remains in a coma at press time, nearly a week following a collision with a motorcycle driven by Michael Kelley.
Kelley, 56, of Sonoma, underwent heart surgery Thursday at UC San Francisco, where he remains in critical condition, after initial treatment for fractured vertebrae at Santa Rosa’s Memorial Hospital.
Sonoma Police Sgt. Dave Pederson said preliminary tests show that Kelley’s blood alcohol level was .18 percent when the accident occurred; the legal limit to drive is .08 percent.
According to police, Dreyer and another skateboarder, who was not injured, were riding eastbound in the westbound lane of West Spain Street just after midnight. “It appears their actions did not contribute to the accident,” said Sonoma Police Sgt. Darin Dougherty.
Traveling eastbound and approaching the boarders from behind near the intersection of Second Street West, Kelley’s motorcycle crossed the double-yellow line and struck Dreyer. The Kawasaki then slid into a fence and came to rest against the house beyond. Pederson said he could not gauge how fast the motorcycle was traveling at the time of impact.
